Child Safety

Parents on the Playground

We would like your children to be comfortable and confident here at school and therefore, the first week of school parents will be allowed on the playground and in the school buildings in the mornings to help their students reorient to school or for our first timers at Grammar School, to orient themselves to our school. However, beginning on September 2nd, parents will need to drop their child(ren) off at the back gate on Aiken Street where a duty aide will be there to greet them and allow them onto the playground, and parents will then no longer be allowed on the playground or in the buildings with his/her child. Additionally, students may enter school through the front door, where another aide will be there to greet them and allow them into the building. Only the front door will open at 7:45 a.m., and not before then, to allow those children who will be eating breakfast to come in.

Tardy Bell Information

The first bell rings at 8:20 a.m. M-W,F and 8:50 a.m. on Thursdays. At 8:25 a.m. M-W, F, and 8:55 a.m. on Thursdays, the tardy bell will ring and the back gate will be locked and all tardy students will need to come in the front of the school with a parent so that we can have a conversation as to why your child is late.

Front Door and Pick Up/Drop Off Procedure

The front lobby doors will remain locked from 8:25 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. as well as all gates. If you need to check your child out of school, you will come in the front doors, ring the bell located on the electronic device on the second set of doors, and you will hear our school secretary answer the bell. Please look into the camera and state your purpose. The secretary will have you sign out your child on a checkout sheet provided in that front entrance area. She will then call your child down to come and meet you in that front entrance area. If you are just dropping off items for your child, there will be sticky notes and pens available on the shelving unit in the front entrance. Please write your child’s name and classroom on the note, place the note on the items you are dropping off, and place the items on the shelves provided. We will get those items to your child.

Parent Volunteers

If you are coming to volunteer in your child’s classroom, you will ring the bell, the secretary will answer, and you will let her know you are here to volunteer in your child’s classroom. She will check the list that the teacher has previously given her to make sure you are on the list, then she will then let you in and you will come into her office to sign in as a volunteer and place the proper identification badge on before going into your child’s classroom.

Pick Up/Drop Off Lane and Crosswalks

You will notice that we now have a drop off/pickup lane on Aiken Street along the back sidewalk of the school. Between the hours of 7:45 a.m.-3:45 p.m., it is just that, a drop off/pick up area, no parking is allowed. This means that you may not park in the lane for more than a few minutes----just long enough for your child to safely exit the car or enter the car and then you must move on-no parking to talk on your cell phone or chat with friends. The drop off/pick up lane allows up to about 8 cars at a time. Additionally, there will no longer be crosswalks in the middle of Aiken Street or 5th Street. All crosswalks are at the intersections of the following areas: 5th and Aiken, 5th and Lay, 6th and Aiken, and 6th and Lay. Crossing guards will be on duty before and after school, so, please park your cars close to those intersection areas when waiting for your child so that you are not tempted to have your child cross over in the middle of the street.

Change in Plans

If there is going to be a change in plans of how your child will get home, or who will be picking up your child, etc. and you need to get a message to your child about this change in plans, please notify the office by no later than 2:00 p.m. We cannot guarantee your child will get the message after that time. We strongly encourage you to have those arrangements made before your child even goes to school that day and send a note for the teacher.

Checking Out a Student Before 3:00 p.m.

Parking is limited at Grammar School and some of you may be tempted to come early and check your child out of school to beat the rush. Please know that school is in session until 3:00 p.m. We realize that there will be times you do need to pick your child up early, just not on a daily basis.

Sickness and Attendance

There are so many wonderful things your child will be learning this year; we look forward to having them here every day. Good attendance is important. However, if your child should become ill, here is a rule of thumb as to when to keep your child home. If your child has a fever, vomits, or has diarrhea, he/she needs to stay home until they are 24 hours symptom-free without the aid of medication.

If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call us at 775-623-8160. If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please call to schedule an appointment. We look forward to a wonderful school year together.
